PROFILE
In 2015 at the age of 18, Gurjot Singh and his family immigrated from India to Canada.
Unsure of what career path to follow, Singh took a job as a manager of a convenience store in Surrey, BC. Then one day, a realtor friend of his father introduced him to the Canadian real estate market.

“In India, my father had invested in property and then would sell the lots for profit. I knew a little about real estate but it was much different than in Canada,” says Singh. “I wasn’t really interested in selling real estate, but the industry did pique my interest.”

Unbeknownst to him, Singh would soon become curious about the mortgage brokering world. It started when a friend of his encountered hurdle after hurdle while trying to secure financing for his home purchase.

“My friend was purchasing his first home in Canada, and he told me about how difficult the mortgage transaction was. He felt like he was navigating the process blind,” says Singh. “That triggered a real interest in finding out all I could about becoming a mortgage broker.”

Becoming a broker.

After spending time researching his chosen path, in 2022 he attended UBC’s Sauder School of Business to receive his mortgage broker accreditation.

That same year, Singh was hired by The Mortgage Group (TMG). He says being introduced to one of the top five mortgage brokers in Alberta, a man who became his mentor at TMG, has been key to his success.

“I’ve learned so much from him,” says Singh.

After working remotely from BC for the last three years, Singh made the decision in April of this year that it was best for him to move to Alberta in order to better service his clients in person.

Motivated to help others realize their dream of home ownership, Singh says his job is to help clients navigate the complex and often overwhelming world of home financing. With so many options and considerations to keep in mind, he understands that it can be challenging, especially for those who are new to Canada.

Singh says he views himself as a strategist. “Building trust is key. I want each of my clients to feel like they are in safe hands. I never over promise, I’m transparent and professional. It’s not just about getting the best mortgage rate, it’s about safeguarding their future.”

One look at his multiple five-star reviews and it is safe to say Singh is keeping his promise.

To me, the heart of the home buying process is the mortgage, finding the right financing solution for each client.

Out of office.

Focussing his career sights on Edmonton and Grande Prairie, when asked about what he loves about these two cities, Singh says: “Both are emerging northern Alberta cities that offer more affordable housing options, ones that offer so much potential for growth, which is perfect for young families. Another bonus is lower taxes and no property tax transfer taxes to pay.”

Other reasons people are moving to these cities? Grand Prairie is known for its strong economy based on oil and gas, forestry, agriculture and retail. It is also popular for its numerous lakes, impressive glaciers and jaw-dropping views of the Canadian Rockies. Edmonton is a vibrant urban centre in the wilderness heartland, boasting great employment opportunities, low cost of living, rich cultural scene, natural beauty, and is home to the country’s largest mall, the West Edmonton Mall.

When it comes to unwinding, Singh loves hanging out with friends, and watching or playing sports, such as cricket and soccer. He also enjoys time spent in nature, most notably walking or hiking the Calgary-area’s Ghost and Chesterman lakes.

While living in BC, Singh was moved to try to make a positive impact for those dealing with food insecurity.

“I volunteered for an NGO feeding the residents of the Downtown Eastside,” says Singh.

Now in Calgary, Singh rolls up his sleeves serving meals at his Sikh temple, where everyone is welcome to come for a free hot meal – no questions asked.

“The doors are open to everyone. We are, afterall, all humans,” he explains.
