Marrying culture, community, heritage and faith, 44 Broadway enhances a local icon and introduces a harmonious new building to the bustling Yonge and Eglinton neighbourhood. Building on a legacy spanning over 100 years, St. Monica’s Roman Catholic Church and the Archdiocese of Toronto launched a request for proposals that was met with an inspired and multi-faceted vision from Collecdev and KPMB Architects. Securing the landmark for future generations, the proposed redevelopment of the church would provide the parish with a contemporary home. Taking cues from the architectural expression of traditional places of worship, the 2,564-square-metre church is enveloped in stone and gold-framed glass, with a 25-metre corner steeple serving as a signature marker. The design is deftly integrated within the ever-evolving urban fabric of Yonge and Eglinton. Facing Broadway Avenue, the four-storey church will contain offices, flex rooms, gathering spaces, a parish hall, and a modern reinterpretation of a narthex. The mix of materials and gentle curves of the building form reflect a more modern tone suitable for a neighbourhood undergoing rapid physical changes. The north edge of the site will host a 44-storey residential tower containing 398 condominiums. A range of one-, two- and three-bedroom layouts are offered, with a number of units reserved for retired priests. A significant selection of residences will also be available under Collecdev H.O.M.E., a program that connects buyers with an affordable avenue to home ownership. A five-minute walk away from the Line 1 subway and the future Eglinton Crosstown LRT, 44 Broadway is located in a mature and exciting neighbourhood defined by its entertainment, retail, and lifestyle amenities. 44 Broadway underscores Collecdev’s commitment to heritage and design excellence, and its partnership with St. Monica’s Parish renews the mission of the church as an inclusive, diverse, and accessible place to celebrate faith.
