Langley Township
Deprice Milton
Langley Township resident.
With wide open spaces and plenty of local businesses, Langley Township is like nowhere else for this farmer.
Deprice Milton tends to both her animals and her community.
Deprice Milton runs Kensington Prairie Farm, her family’s alpaca farm, in Langley Township. She grew up visiting the farm as a child, and felt the call to return in 2014, after finishing her studies at UBC. She was craving the area’s wide-open spaces and close connections to nature, which she helped host Stephen Tadgh experience in the RealTours: Langley Township episode. Here are her thoughts about what life is like here and advice for those considering moving to Langley Township.
Can you tell us a bit about who you are?
I run my family's alpaca farm in Langley, BC called Kensington Prairie Farm with my grandparents and I am a mother, a farmer and a community builder.
How long have you lived in Langley?
I spent my summers at the farm since I was eight years old, but I moved out here permanently in 2014, when I finished my degree at UBC.
Why did you move to Langley?
I was tired of hearing sirens all night and wanted to hear crickets, frogs and coyotes. I wanted to be able to see the moon at night and I wanted to have my own animals.
Has it changed since you moved here? How so?
It is definitely bigger, more busy and there are a lot of great businesses and farms popping up. It’s easy to shop and support local here.
What sort of home do you live in and what advice would you give to someone who wants to move to Langley?
House. Do it! There is so much happening in Langley and so many great opportunities for families and young adults. The air is fresher and the presence of nature all around is calming for the soul.
What are the biggest housing challenges you see in Langley?
Currently, there is not that much available in rural areas for rental properties. This makes it hard for farmers like us to hire local, dependable help.
Favourite thing about Langley?
I love that you can visit the ocean, the country and the mountains all in the same day!
In your opinion, what are the best kept secrets of Langley?
Personally, I think that all of the little family-run businesses and farms are hidden gems that are so special to this community.
What are your favourite local traditions?
We love the Santa parade and community garage sales.
What is it like raising a family in Langley?
Really amazing to be honest. There are so many great local daycares and schools, as well as sports programs and events.
What are some stereotypes people hold about Langley? Do you think they’re true? Why or why not?
I think that a lot of people assume that Langley is just a farming community but it really is way more than that. There are so many amazing, talented and up and coming local artists and creators, businesses and events. The city is expanding and it’s a great place to be!
What do you do for fun in Langley?
We love to go on walks and hikes – we love places like Derby Reach and Aldergrove Park.
Where do you work and how is the commute? If you work from home, can you describe the level of traffic generally and how it affects you?
We live and work on the farm; we are close to 16 Avenue, so there are always cars but it rarely becomes congested. It’s a great place to be, in the country.
If you could distill Langley down to three words, what would they be?
“Community, growth, sustainability.” These capture Langley’s focus on local support, agriculture, and its thriving, close-knit atmosphere.
