Value of residential construction permits in Vancouver and across province in September increased at much higher rate than Canadian average, according to Statistics Canada

Following an anticipated slowdown in August, residential construction permits in Vancouver and across BC rose significantly in September, according to the latest figures from Statistics Canada released November 6.

Vancouver saw the total value of residential construction permits, for all property types, rise to $409,168 from $380,485 in August. BC’s permits in September were valued at $621,926, compared with $591,909.

However, the most significant increase was seen in the year-over-year figures, with Vancouver’s residential permit values up 64.1 per cent compared with September 2013, and BC’s total residential permits valued at 54.4 per cent more than last year.

When broken down by property type, permits for single-family homes in BC both fell compared with August but increased around 20 per cent year over year.

Huge year-over-year rises were seen in permits for duplexes, which in Vancouver were valued at more than nine times the amount in September 2013.

Across Canada, the value of residential building permits increaed 11.2 per cent year over year.
