Action group is same organization that cut off Mayor Gregor Robertson's speech with protests at the Vancouver Housing Summit
A housing affordability action group today (June 27) shut down Vancouver City Council proceedings by storming and taking over council chambers during its regular Tuesday session.
The rush on council was led by former Mayoral candidate and Order of Canada member Jean Swanson, who is well known for her advocacy for low-income residents. Swanson finally took her chance to sit in the Mayoral seat after the session was shut down, live internet streaming was cut and officials had exited the chambers.
Alliance Against Displacement is the same group that cut off Mayor Gregor Robertson's speech at the Vancouver Housing Summit in October.
The protesters held up signs and chanted "Our homes can't wait" and a number of speakers took to the podium to express their frustations over homelessness,Vancouver's tent cities, slumlords and SROs, and gentrification, especially in Chinatown.
Here is the social media reaction to the events as they happened.
