The West End

The West End is perhaps best known for its towering apartment blocks and the gay village centred on Davie St. But since it spans from Park Lane to Granville St. and Beach Ave. to Georgia St., it’s also home to many families. Beyond its nightlife hotspots, the side streets lead to parks, schools, churches and other gathering places.

In addition to Davie St., Denman St. acts as a more local hub. Lined with shops, services and restaurants, this is where you go for everything from gelato to prescriptions. Tourism is also a key part of the West End, and around Denman St. you will find the historic Sylvia Hotel, the Best Western Plus Sands and many more throughout the neighbourhood.

Speaking of Davie St., it’s home to The Junction, known for serving food, drag and bingo, Numbers, notable for its packed dance floor, Celebrities, which predominantly caters to a heterosexual clientele today, the Pumpjack, which sees attendance by the bear and leather crowds, the Fountainhead Pub, serving food and acting as a gathering place and 1181 Lounge, with its contemporary aesthetic and distinctive cocktails. And if you’re looking for more than a night out, another hotel, the Sandman, is conveniently located near all of these clubs.

The housing here consists of a mix of condos, co-ops and leaseholds (with the occasional townhome), so be sure to do your research into these various types before making a purchase. But with Stanley Park nearby and English Bay beach as well, be prepared to compete with other Homeseekers.
