Ready for some northern exposure? Winter may be coming, but don’t think of Edmonton in terms of the “Game of Thrones” north. It’s more like a “one of the largest and most affordable cities in Canada, with an ever-growing dining scene and lots to offer” kind of north. This week, our Where to Live in Canada series takes a look at Edmonton, located just a four-hour drive from Jasper National Park. And In case you missed it, check out last week's 'Where to Live in Canada: Vancouver Neighbourhood Guide.'

If you’re not familiar with the city, the very idea of finding places to live in Edmonton can be intimidating. As the fifth-largest and one of the most affordable cities in Canada, Edmonton neighbourhoods offer a lot of choices, and the city attracts so many people that sometimes while living in Edmonton, it appears that subdivisions pop up overnight. The key to finding your perfect home in Edmonton is figuring out what your current needs are and matching those with a great community - here are five of our top picks.

Young Buyers Love the Central South Side

Young professionals moving to Edmonton might ask, “Where should I live in Edmonton if I want to be steps away from my social life?”. One of the most sought after communities for those working downtown or attending the University of Alberta is Strathcona. Across the river from downtown and a short bike ride to the UofA, Strathcona is appealing to many young home buyers. Close to the Art Gallery of Alberta, music and arts festivals keep the streets alive year-round and unique shopping and dining experiences are steps away. Residents of Strathcona often enjoy walking along the river valley pathways while admiring views of the city skyline – including fireworks on Canada Day. Other recreation options like swimming and golfing can be found just down the hill at Kinsmen Park. We also recommend Queen Alexandra neighbourhood, located directly south of the University.

Historic Neighbourhoods Attract High-Income Professionals

Picturesque Glenora borders the North Saskatchewan River. Situated West of Downtown and just across the river from the University of Alberta, it’s difficult to find a more beautiful or conveniently located neighbourhood. With stunning historic properties along tree-lined streets, Glenora has always been considered one of the top areas to live in Edmonton. Those who have the budget to call Glenora home can’t help but feel that they live someplace very special. Walking down the streets of Glenora, you get a glimpse of what Edmonton used to be like one hundred years ago.

New Families Gravitate South for Convenience

Young families love the community of Summerside for many reasons, but probably the most unique is the beach alongside the manmade lake that residents get to enjoy. Located on the southeast side of the city, Summerside is an ideal neighbourhood for new families who want to be close to schools and childcare options. The area is near a hospital and one of the city’s busiest shopping centres – South Edmonton Common. Another family-friendly community to consider, Charlesworth, is located just northeast of Summerside. Families who settle in this part of the city consider it one of the best places to live in Edmonton.

Active Families in Central Communities

When you are living in Edmonton in the winter, having busy children and teenagers can be hard to juggle. It’s easy to feel trapped indoors during our long winters and extracurriculars are often scattered throughout the city. Leger is considered to be one of the best places to live in Edmonton for older families, in part because it’s home to the Terwillegar Community Centre. This massive complex provides the perfect space for residents in Leger and surrounding communities to get out excess energy and connect with loved ones. When the snow melts, the nearby river valley is the perfect place to play. Plus, Leger’s central location means less time on the roads getting to and from lessons.

Simplifying by Downsizing in West Edmonton

Sometimes the empty nest you’re left with after the kids move out is too big. When choosing where to live in Edmonton, having everything you need close by can simplify your life that much more. One of the most popular areas for those looking to downsize is called Windermere. Located on the west side of the city, living in Windermere is like living in a city within a city. The variety of amenities is second to none - groceries, banking, restaurants, shopping, fitness centres – it’s all right here. And if by chance it isn’t, you have easy access to the rest of the city via Anthony Henday Drive. The nearby communities of Ambleside and Glenridding Heights also boast all the conveniences offered in this area.
