The City of Vancouver has announced winners to its affordable housing competition, Re:THINK HOUSING.

Proposals involving thinner streets, reinventing lot patterns and housing types and allowing home owners to sell density and air rights to allow buildings to "bridge" overtop existing buildings won top accolades from the Mayor's Task Force on Housing Affordability.

Those winning projects were:

  • In the vibrant neighbourhoods public category, "Thin Streets: Turning Asphalt into Affordable Housing" by Christina DeMarco;
  • In the building bold public category, "Bridge Housing" by Ian McDonald; and
  • In the vibrant neighbourhoods private category, "Human Space: Density for Community and the Socio-Ecological Neighbourhood" by Andrew Neuman.

The city has also announced four people's choice awards and six honourable mentions. Over 8,000 online votes were cast during the competition.

All winning projects can be viewed at http://www.rethinkhousing.ca.
