Port Coquitlam, a small city of just over 57,000, is about 40 kilometres outside the City of Vancover. It was officially incorporated as a municipality in 1913 and city hall was built the following year.
Picturesquely situated, Port Coquitlam's southern boundary is the Fraser River, to the east is the Pitt River and to the north are the Coast Mountains. The word Coquitlam is from the Salish word "Kwayhquitlum," which means "red fish in the river". This is a reference to the river's annual salmon run.

Port Coquitlam also hosts a number of festivals each year. The May Day Festival, celebrating the arrival of Spring, has been part of the community for almost eighty years. In the summer, the Music in the Park series offers several outdoor concerts in Lions Park.

Port Coquitlam offers a number of ways for residents to stay active and fit. Residents can go for a stroll along the PoCo Trail, which follows the banks of the Pitt River. The trail is also great for hiking, biking and horseback riding.
Golf lovers should visit the Carnoustie Golf and Raquet Club, an 18-hole course that is open year round. The facilities also include driving range, practice green and six squash courts.
Port Coquitlam also hosts a number of recreational centres for residents. The Hyde Creek Centre has an indoor gymnasium, outdoor swimming pools and weight and fitness facilities. The renovated PoCo Recreation Centre offers an ice-skating arena and full fitness facilities.
Port Coquitlam Transportation
TransLink offers several bus routes to Port Coquitlam, including the 160 Port Coquitlam Station/Vancouver and the 169 Coquitlam Station/Braid Station routes. Transit riders can also hop on the SkyTrain West Coast Express line, which has a stop at Port Coquitlam Station. Drivers can take Lougheed Highway to Barnet Highway and continue west to access other communities in the surrounding area and Downtown Vancouver.
