TV's most beloved brotherly duo have some pretty solid real estate advice for buyers and sellers

HGTV's Property Brothers are no strangers to home improvement or real estate sales. Over the years, we've watched contractor Jonathan Scott turn the shabbiest of homes into fabulous, liveable spaces and witness his real estate agent brother Drew market them to potential buyers in style. With all of this experience under their belt, it's needless to say that we could all learn a lesson or two from his dynamic duo.

Check out some of the biggest real estate lessons we've learned from Drew and Jonathan.

1. Famliarize yourself with the neighbourhood before buying

The brothers explain that actually walking through the neighbourhood you plan on buying in is a good idea. Physically exploring the area will give buyers a better idea of the traffic density, how noisy the area is and what potential neighbours are like.

2. Effective staging can make all the difference in getting your home sold quickly

Depersonalizing the home by removing family photos and personal items and decluttering the home are two of the simplest way to stage the home for quick sale, explain the brothers. Washing windows to brighten up the space is also a very quick and easy way to add a finishing touch to the home to make it more appealing to potential buyers. 3. Don't just buy the first home you see – even if you love it

Drew recommends looking at least 10 homes before making a final decision, even if the first home you see looks like the winner. He suggests making a checklist of things you absolutely need in a home and ranking each home you see from one to 10. After touring several homes, they can start to blend together, so keeping score is an effective way to remember which made the cut and which didn't.

4. Don't let ugly aesthetics in a home dissuade you from buying

Jonathan explains that things like ugly carpet or bad wallpaper are things that shouldn't dissuade buyers from going through with the purchase of a home. He says that keeping an open mind about things you can easily replace will help you imagine yourself in the home and personalizing the space.

5. It's worth renovating to resell

The brothers explain that if you're looking to sell an old, dated home, simply replacing the carpet or kitchen appliances will not actually increase the value of the home at all. Instead, the brothers suggest spending the money and renovating big-ticket items in the home like the kitchen and master bedroom to wow buyers.

The Property Brothers have more than proven themselves to be experts when it comes to renovating and selling homes. We'll be keeping tabs on these two to see what other tidbits of wisdom they'll give us on their show.
