Located 10-15 kilometres east of Vancouver, where the Coquitlam River meets the Fraser River, Coquitlam is the fifth-largest city in British Columbia with a population of 114,565. It borders Burnaby, Port Moody, New Westminster and Port Coquitlam, and was incorporated in 1891 as the District of Coquitlam.
First inhabited by the Coast Salish, Coquitlam's name is derived from the Coast Salish term "Kwikwetlem", meaning "red fish up the river".

There are 45 elementary schools, 13 middle schools and nine secondary schools in the Coquitlam School District, serving 30,000 students. Simon Fraser University is nearby on Burnaby Mountain and the University of British Columbia is in Vancouver.

There are also trails for hiking and walking throughout Coquitlam.

Coquitlam is located in the Greater Vancouver Regional District, accessible by bus links from Coquitlam Town Centre, the SkyTrain lines, which go directly into Burnaby and Vancouver, and surrounding suburbs and the West Coast Express, which provides comfortable train services from Mission to Vancouver and all cities in between.
