In part one of REW's new series, learn how this bustling town offers a slice of life for any and all tastes.
Coast to coast, Canada has a lot to offer home buyers. In REW's new "Where to Live in Canada" series, we're exploring the unique benefits and attractions of five of our country's hottest real estate markets. First up, learn the ins and outs of Calgary's distinct neighbourhoods and home styles.
Calgary, once a sleepy farm town, rode the crest of an oil boom to become the thriving metropolitan city it is today. From glittering skyscrapers to emerald-green open spaces, Calgary’s variety of neighbourhoods has a place that suits every lifestyle.
Homes to Suit Millenials and Young Couples
If you’re among the many members of Gen-Y who are in a career-focused mode, several things may be crucial to your home-buying plans. Many millennials are looking for a smallish space close to the action that fits their out-and-about lifestyle, but they may also have an eye on an extra bedroom or two, which may be used for a home office in an entrepreneurial endeavour or may serve as a nursery for future family members. Because so many Gen-Y members are mindful of the environment, access to public transit is crucial, both for reducing their carbon footprint and to save on the cost of fuel. Many millennials are waiting a little longer to purchase homes than did previous generations, so they’re often very particular about the homes they choose. In Calgary, areas like 17th Ave SW and Eau Claire will offer everything this group is looking for - including a vibrant nightlife. At REW we have constructed a highly detailed website that provides plenty of information for online research about each neighbourhood and property.

A Home for Two With Room to Grow
Couples with two incomes and no children often have higher than average disposable income, and purchasing a home is a fantastic way to use those spare dollars to secure a bright future. There are a few things to consider if you’re among this demographic. If you plan to have children anytime soon, you’ll want to take into account additional bedrooms and the quality of the schools in the area where you are buying a home.
Also, consider your lifestyle now versus what it may be in five or ten years. Being able to walk home from a night out may be ideal now, but being on the same block with late-night bars and clubs may not always be your preference. A good combination of quiet streets and proximity to fun can be found in a number of Calgary’s neighbourhoods. Consider a high rise downtown with sweeping views of the city and ready access to the arts district, or look for properties in the Bridgeland and Riverside neighbourhoods. These aren’t far from the Bow River, and the pace of life is a little more laid-back than in the heart of the city, if that is the vibe you’re seeking.
710-46 NE 9 Street, Calgary, AB
Built in 2016, this apartment has three bedrooms and three full baths. If you’re thinking about growing your family in the foreseeable future, this might be the ideal location for you. Neighbourhoods Built for Making Memories With the Family
When families with children are looking for homes, their kids are generally at the center of the decision-making process. Are the schools adequate for your needs? Are the streets safe? Are there plenty of green spaces to enjoy recreation and fresh air together? Calgary has a host of such neighbourhoods where parents can feel secure that their kids will grow up well –– and Mom and Dad’s investment dollars will be protected!
Growing families need to look for the basics such as the number of bedrooms, but other factors play into the choice. With children, and perhaps the pets that often go with them, outdoor spaces and large yards are a plus. Nearby amenities like children’s museums and perhaps youth sports leagues may be important to your family. The Brentwood neighbourhood is fantastic for outdoorsy families, considering its many open spaces and activity trails.
For Mom and Dad, ease of commute may be important, and the Rundle neighbourhood is a gem in this regard. Whether shuttling the kids to sports practice or getting to the office easily, families will enjoy Rundle’s proximity to the Trans-Canada Highway and local public transit.
1404 NW Northmount Drive, Calgary, AB
Perfect for gatherings, this six-bedroom house is fully renovated and offered at an excellent price. Featuring large windows, it welcomes lots of natural light into every room. There are several schools and universities nearby, so you might also be saving commuting time as well. See the listing here.
Taking Things in a New Direction
Empty nesters and adults who may be looking to downsize will find plenty to suit their needs in Calgary’s many neighbourhoods, each of which has a distinct flavour of its own.
Many in this population group are looking for less space, but typically, they want more of everything else, including high-end finishes in their homes like new kitchens, marble, and hardwood floors. They also want homes that are near activities they like. After all, if you’ve worked hard for decades, it’s time to enjoy life.
Calgary’s City Centre neighbourhood is ideal for people living this lifestyle. The gentrified and new-build homes are often spectacular, and the area provides ready access to fine dining, river walks, and live theatre. Moving to the center of town also means freedom from activities such as lawn care and exterior home maintenance, so that residents can focus more on themselves, their relationships, and their experiences rather than the state of their gutters or driveway sealant.
This newly-renovated two-bedroom condo comes with brand new hard flooring. Enjoy views of the Bow River Ravine, a fabulous open kitchen with tile flooring, and a fireplace. This home provides a fantastic lifestyle opportunity with proximity to the exceptional walking/biking/jogging pathway system, beautiful Prince's Island Park, Bow River and Lagoon, YMCA, Eau Claire Market Shops, Cinemas, and Peace Bridge. The ultimate in downtown urban living. See the listing here.
Whatever your lifestyle, interests and preferences, you’re sure to find just the right fit among Calgary’s widely varied neighbourhoods.
