Kristen and Henry own and operate Homeslice Cafe and Bakery in Kerrisdale and love serving their customers in the area. Here are their thoughts on what it’s like to open a business here and the neighbourhood as a whole.
Can you tell us a bit about who you are and the role you play in the community?
We are a family-run bakery and cafe located in Kerrisdale along West Boulevard and 37th Avenue. Our goal is to contribute to the vibrant community of Kerrisdale through creating good food and a warm space where everyone feels welcome and valued.
Why did you move to Vancouver West, specifically Kerrisdale?
When we were looking for a location for our bakery, we wanted to find a space where there was a good balance of flow of people while still having a strong community feel. The community of Kerrisdale has a vibrant level of energy with a rich history of members that call the area their home.
How long have you operated in Kerrisdale?
Our bakery has been open in Kerrisdale since June 2023.
Has it changed since you moved here? How so?
Not really. We have seen some changes to businesses due to closures and other external factors. Kerrisdale is also showing change with some construction of new residential and commercial buildings as well as upgrades to the secondary school track.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to move to Kerrisdale?
Visit the area and take time to explore the community by walking through it. Take time to experience what the area has to offer - go into the various shops and say hello, walk up and down the streets to get a feel of the beauty of the community and what it has to offer to its residents.
What are the biggest housing challenges you see in Vancouver West and Kerrisdale?
The challenges for the area are prevalent in all of Vancouver - the cost of living is very high compared to the average buying capacity. As the city planners and developers look for solutions, we hope that the end result retains the beauty of the neighbourhood.

The people and sense of community.
In your opinion, what are the best kept secrets of Kerrisdale?
Food scene in Kerrisdale – you can find very diverse options of cuisines in this neighbourhood!
What are your favourite local traditions?
Kerrisdale community events like Kerrisdale Days are so much fun and bring everyone out to join together in festivities.
How are you involved with Kerrisdale?
We opened a cafe and bakery in Kerrisdale because we wanted to be a part of the community. We try to make connections with different Kerrisdale businesses, with the local schools, and with our regulars who live or work close-by to foster a sense of connectedness.
Where’s the best place in Kerrisdale for a coffee? A nice dinner? A drink?
Are we biased if we say, "Homeslice Cafe and Bakery"? But really, there are so many options to choose from. If you enjoy a wide variety of classics, Moore’s Bakery has a great selection and has been the longest-standing bakery in the community. If you’re looking for a good, hearty meal, Minerva’s Restaurant has great offerings where you’ll likely find something for everyone.
What are some stereotypes people hold about Kerrisdale? Do you think they’re true? Why or why not?
It is a boring neighbourhood. That's not true. If you want neon lights and loud music, then Kerrisdale is not the place for you. If you want a neighbourhood that has a lot to offer – community services, grocery stores, restaurants, shopping – while still feeling a good balance of peace and activity, then Kerrisdale is the place for you.
What do you do for fun in and around Kerrisdale and nearby?
Exploring the different restaurants, walking the Arbutus greenway, going skating at the Ice Rink, simply taking a walk along the tree-lined streets!
What is it like to work in Kerrisdale and serve the community?
It is wonderful to open up our shop in Kerrisdale. We are very thankful for everyone in the community who has come into our little shop and shown us so much ongoing care and support.
