Vision Vancouver wants to increase proportion of family-sized homes in new condo buildings – but critics say that this will not make family housing more affordable

With demand for family housing in Vancouver driving up the cost of single-family homes and larger condos, Vision Vancouver is planning to increase the supply of larger condo units in the city will help make family housing more affordable, reports REW.ca’s sister publication Business in Vancouver.

The party has made a campaign pledge to increase the number of two- and three-bedroom units developers are required to include in new condo buildings. Under current rules, 25 per cent of units must be family-sized; Vision wants to increase that to 35 per cent.

But developers and the city’s former chief planner say it’s unlikely that requiring developers to build more family units will reduce Vancouver’s high cost of housing.
