Video: Celebrity Canadian designers share their thoughts about what's trending in interior design, with lots of examples from Interior Design Show West.

When it comes to décor trends, interior designers say it's all about celebrating nostalgia, reclaimed wood, old-school patterns and going green in a big way. This year's Interior Design Show West (IDS), which was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre in September, showcased the unstoppable trend of getting back to basics.

"What clients are asking for in interior design is a return to simplicity, being less ostentatious and more utilitarian not denying something's function," says Kelly Deck of Kelly Deck Designs and host of HGTV's The West Coast Way. "I think design is more honest, we are seeing things that have a natural material, pieces that tell the story of the people who live there."

Certainly sculptor, furniture designer and artist Brent Comber would agree. Recently named Furniture Designer of the Year 2013 by Western Living magazine, he says he's thrilled that "shiny plastic looking wood is out.

"People want meaningful, functional pieces made of real materials that have an intrinsic meaning to them," he says, adding that he uses species indigenous to BC, such as spruce, maple, alder, cedar or Douglas fir.
