It’s felt like spring all week long, and that means it’s time to start gardening

Sure, it’s only mid-February. But it’s felt like spring all week long, and that means it’s time to start gardening. You’ve got to start slow, though – only hardy, cold-weather crops are ready to plant this early in the season. Here are three early crops you can plant before the end of the month.

  • Broad Beans: Also known as fava beans, these hardy plants will produce beautiful, orchid-like flowers before the summer bean harvest.
  • Peas: In a small garden, you can maximize space by getting your pea harvest out of the way before it’s time to plant your beans – but that means planting your peas early in the season. Now’s the time, whether you want to rotate crops or just get peas onto your table as soon as you can.
  • Radishes: Radishes are a favourite early crop because they can be planted early and they mature quickly. Plant your radishes this weekend and you’ll be eating them in March.

All three of these crops can be planted from seed straight into the soil outside. Follow the seed packet instructions for seed depth and spacing to maximize your harvest.
