Vancouver is looking to the laneway to provide more housing without destroying neighbourhood character. But though City Hall only approved laneway houses in 2009, there are some that date back over a hundred years. Back then, these cottage-sized homes would be built to house relatives or servants or to serve as temporary residences while the main house was built.
Here’s your chance to see both new and old examples of laneway housing.
As part of its popular series of self-guided Vancouver home tours, the Vancouver Heritage Foundation presents “100 Years of Living on the Lane,” the 2014 Laneway House Tour.
Included is a 900 sq ft Victorian house from 1890 that actually pre-dates the lane. It was added after the small house and a larger residence on the same property were built. A 1980s example was built as part of a strata and designed by well-known architect Paul Merrick. As well, six post-2009 laneway houses demonstrate how small can be beautiful.
