Don't buy tools, borrow them.
The Vancouver Tool Library has a collection of tools for gardening, home jobs and bike repair and members can borrow them for free. The VTL is located at 3448 Commercial, just south of East 18th.
It's a voluntary organization that operates on the belief that sharing can change the world, and in particular, sharing tools can reduce waste, grow new skills and improve the community.
Very sensible indeed. After all, how often do you need a sod-cutter or a nail gun? If you're a new homeowner who's struggling just to pay the mortgage, or a condo-dweller with no room for a tool collection, this is a godsend. Borrow the tools you need, get them back on time and you pay nothing. You just have to become a member.
And if you're giving up the workbench in your basement because you're downsizing to a condo, give your tool collection a second life: donate your tools to the VTL.
As the Vancouver Tool Library grows there are also plans for workshops.
