First Nations have joined forces with developer Corpus to urge the BC government to protect people who unwittingly buy land that is a sacred aboriginal site, reports REW.ca's sister publication Business in Vancouver.
The Sema:th First Nation (SFN), Sto:lo Nation and Corpus Management Group principal John Glazema want Victoria to create a fund to compensate landowners who buy property that turns out to contain burial grounds or other sacred sites. They also want the existence of sacred aboriginal sites to be on land title documents – much like pipeline rights-of-way are.
However, in an email to Business in Vancouver, lands minister Steve Thomson rejected both ideas, saying including such sites on title documents would be deceptive.
