Sales of single-family homes were down in September while strata unit sales rose in the Chilliwack area.

There were 73 sales of single-family detached homes worth $24.4 million last month, which compares to 106 homes worth $35 million in September 2011, according to the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board (CADREB).

Last month 35 townhouses and 22 apartments worth a total of $11 million sold, up from 27 townhouses and 13 apartments worth $8.6 million in the same month last year.

The total CADREB numbers for the month contrasted with other markets in the Lower Mainland where sales were down.

In a press release, CADREB pointed to the sale last month of 15 houses with acreage totalling $10 million as a sign that the local market was attractive.

"In the past, the dream of a house with some land may have been unattainable," said CADREB president Cynthia Admiraal, president of the Chilliwack and District Real Estate Board (CADREB).

"However, with the sustained low prices and low interest rates, that dream can now come true for many families. Particularly for families from the metro areas, their dollars go so much further in the valley, and they are embracing the lifestyle."
