Investment in new housing construction in June increased 13.7 per cent year over year in BC, to nearly $611 million, according to Statistics Canada data released August 21.
BC's rise far outstrips the nationwide 3.7 per cent increase to $3.9 billion, and gave the province the biggest increase in new housing construction investment of all provinces and territories.
Broken down by housing type, BC's increase was driven by a 20.4 per cent jump in single-family home construction investment, followed by a 19.8 per cent rise in spending on row homes, or townhome, construction. Condo construction in the province saw a more modest 6.9 per cent increase, and duplex investment dropped by 2.7 per cent.
Across the country, row homes saw the biggest year-over-year increase at 20.8 per cent, with all other housing types posting single-digit percentage growth.
