Old fridges are not cool. Did you know that refrigerators are one of the biggest electricity hogs in your home? In fact, if you've got an old refrigerator chugging away in the basement or garage, you could be spending $85 per year to operate it. If you save energy, you could save money.

Did you know that refrigerators are one of the biggest electricity hogs in your home? In fact, if you've got an old refrigerator chugging away in the basement or garage, you could be spending $85 per year to operate it.

If you save energy, you could save money. In fact, you could even make money.

BC Hydro will give you $30 for your old, inefficient fridge -- and better yet, they'll even cart it away for you and recycle it.

This refrigerator recycling program has taken care of over 275,000 fridges since it began in 2002. The result has been enough of an energy saving to power more than 20,000 homes a year.

A few limits apply.

BC Hydro will only do this twice for any BC Hydro account.

The fridge must be clean and in working condition.

The fridge must have an interior volume of 10 - 24 cubic feet.

Freezers can be picked up too, but in October only.

Visit the Fridge Buy-Back Program page on BC Hydro's website for full information on their appliance removal and recycling. For other tips for homeowners, click here
