While still a relatively undiscovered nook, the city of Kelowna is an inspired area within British Columbia, able to match cultural richness with natural splendour in one convenient location. A fusion of both urban and rural communities, Kelowna’s eateries are able to benefit from freshly-grown, locally sourced produce. This is evident in the aromatic cafés and coffee shops found throughout the city. Here’s a look at some of the region’s best coffee shops to try.
For an eclectic coffee experience that meets you where you’re at, then try the Local Chemist. Started by a couple with a dream of coffee, Daniel and Kerissa, couldn’t find the ideal space to set up so, in 2016, they went the mobile route with a speciality coffee cart based in the Kelowna region. The team supplies speciality coffee to big events like the HomeGrown Market, as well as catering to large-scale events such as weddings and conferences. And, on a semi-full-time basis, they run a coffee programme at Rustic Reel Brewing.
Formerly known as Canoe Coffee Roasters, Bright Jenny started in 2015 as a home-built roaster in a backyard shed in downtown Kelowna, back when the coffee scene was first brewing. Their original coffee trailer became a Kelowna icon, serving speciality coffee at the Kelowna Farmers Market for the past two years. Having outgrown the roaster, the baristas opened the café at the North End of downtown Kelowna where you’re invited to stop by and enjoy a delicious cup of homegrown brew.
In response to what they call ‘big box coffee shops’, Kelowna baristas started the third wave coffee movement that aimed to offer local coffee lovers something a bit different. ThirdSpace Café was part of this wave, serving coffee crafted by renowned Canadian roasters such as Monogram, Phil & Sebastian and Tug 6. The team takes its time in tasting and assessing every coffee so that guests are enjoying the finest cup of coffee. They also serve delicious pastries and snacks supplied by Sandrine French Pastry & Chocolate, The Salty Caramel Kitchen and Blooming in Health.
Founded in 2016 in the basement kitchen of West Kelowna’s Mission Hill Winery with a few bags of top-quality chocolate, Karat has grown over the years, elevating Kelowna’s pastry scene. Using the freshest local ingredients, they craft delectable confections, pastries, chocolates and desserts. And what goes better with such decadent delights if not a great cup of coffee? Karat whips up a fantastic cappuccino to warm your day.
5. Sprout Bread
The smell of freshly baked bread envelopes you in a deliciously comforting blanket of warmth that is only improved by this Kelowna bakery’s fantastic coffee. You can sit back and watch them preparing the day’s baked goods, kneading the dough and shaping the loaves, all the while enjoying a wonderful homegrown brew.
While working in the oil business for 45 years, Max Sloane would check out every book store in whichever city or town he visited, collecting books, bookends and other antiques related to the Quentin Tarantino classic, Pulp Fiction. Upon his retirement, Max opened his dream coffee house, a cosy haven for travellers to enjoy while tasting a truly incredible cup of coffee.
Founded in 1991 and a brother-and-sister team, this family-run café and catering company serves quality-made local food and incredible coffees to Kelowna and the surrounding Okanagan Valley. The pair was inspired by family-crafted recipes and a dedication to home-cooked meals. The ethos is simple – start with good quality, locally-grown ingredients and make the dining experience one to remember. The café can be found in downtown Kelowna on Bernard Avenue, but the team caters all over, for breakfasts, lunches, cocktail parties and dinners.
The aromatic flavours of Kelowna’s many coffee shops will draw you in, giving you a taste of this beautiful region and all it has to offer. Alongside the incredible cafés, Kelowna boasts fine dining, cultural excursions, outdoor activities and some incredible entertainment. It’s no wonder this is becoming a leading residential destination in British Columbia!
