The West End could be getting an architectural taste of the Big Apple

Two New York-style residential towers have been proposed Vancouver’s West End by developers Landa Global Properties and Asia Standard Americas, according to the City of Vancouver website.

In the latest of a number of dramatic tower projects planned for the West End (see “Related” above), the developers are proposing to rezone 1488 Alberni Street and 740 Nicola Street to allow for one 43- and one 48-storey residential tower, designed by New-York architect Robert A.M. Stern Architects (RAMSA).

The towers would be made up of 314 market residential units and 129 market rental units, according to the rezoning application. The developments’ design is reminiscent of iconic New York City towers such as the Empire State Building abd Rockefeller Centre.

“The vision for this proposal is a throwback to the Formalist style, of the early 20th century, reflected in some of the city’s greatest buildings (Hotel Vancouver, The Marine Building, Vancouver Block),” explained the project description. “The proposed design celebrates the diverse architectural styles in the city and provides a unique contrast to the Vancouverism style of glass towers.”

Similar to Vancouver City Hall and Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, the proposed development is reminiscent of early 20th-century architecture

"The base is articulated with a courtyard garden, a series of residential apartment entrances and sculptural details to create a welcoming pedestrian environment," stated the design concept
