A new ".realtor" top-level domain will be available to members of the Canadian Real Estate Association(CREA) from October 23, as well as to members of the National Association of Real Estate Agents (NAR) in the US, the CREA announced August 18.

A top-level domain (TLD) is the suffix on the end of a website URL most commonly .com or .ca in Canada. However, recently there has been a massive expansion in the TLDs that are available, and thousands of options such as .club or .yoga can now be licensed for business or personal use.

As most homebuyers begin their searches online, the CREA said, a .realtor TLD will allow members of CREA to stand out from other real estate professionals.

"We are excited to offer this new and unique branding opportunity to our members," said Beth Crosbie, president of CREA. "A .realtor domain communicates the positive attributes of trust, professionalism and community that consumers associate with the Real Estate Agent name."

The new TLD will be made available to Canadian Real Estate Agents, their local boards and their provincial associations through a deal between the CREA and the NAR.

The NAR began the TLD application process eight years ago through the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the US organization that coordinates domains and Internet Protocol addresses globally. CREA is NAR's exclusive marketing partner and is responsible for the .realtor domain in Canada.

CREA will provide the first 10,000 members who register for a .realtor TLD with a free one-year licence on a first-come first-served basis.
