In the late 1800s and early 1900s, residents of Point Grey and Kerrisdale referred to the future Arbutus area as Asthma Flats. At that time, the neighbourhood was nothing more than a huge swamp that could only be crossed via a three-plank walkway.

Despite its relatively short history as an established community, Arbutus is home to several landmarks, including the Art Deco-style Ridge Theatre. This one-screen cinema was built in 1950 and features a 'crying room' a soundproof, glassed-in booth for moviegoers with babies and small children. Rumour has it Katharine Hepburn once made use of the room's privacy during a visit to Vancouver!
